“I am sincerely grateful to have been awarded the Black Heart Foundation Scholarship this year. This incredible opportunity has not only lightened the financial load of funding my academic pursuits but has also enabled me to wholeheartedly focus on my career aspirations and fully immerse myself in my academic studies. In the past few years of my medical school journey, the funding available to me had decreased, adding to my financial stress. Thanks to this scholarship, I am fortunate to no longer be in the position of having to juggle work and study, allowing me to truly engage in my medical education and all the opportunities it presents. The Black Heart Foundation is an exceptional organization that has positively transformed the lives of countless individuals, myself included.”

Aeronautical Engineering | Loughbourogh University
“I could not be more grateful to be a recipient of the Black Heart Foundation Scholarship. This means so much for me personally, being able to study for my Aeronautical Engineering degree and commit to my Golf which is a big part of my goals, without finances weighing me
down mentally. Having already been in university for a few weeks with all of the expenses coming my way, this could not have come at a better time! Growing up in North London as a Golfer, I didn’t really have anyone to look up to who grew up in a similar situation as me. Golf is still seen as a middle-class sport and I hope to change the narrative. With this scholarship, I hope to use this to help inspire others in my area, to show that anything is possible no matter where you come from or what your background is, and that hard work will be rewarded given enough time. Thank you for believing in me as my family and I have believed in myself.”

“I am immensely overjoyed and grateful that the Black Heart Foundation Trustees granted me a scholarship. Reading the email was heart-warming as I did not believe I would be successful. I am an MA Dance Movement Psychotherapy student, and the scholarship will assist with my weekly personal therapy fees. As I work and study part-time, this scholarship will ease the financial pressure for the next year so I can focus on my studies. The Black Heart Foundation is truly a gift to the community as it provides an opportunity to secure funding to allow you to begin or continue your studies, especially as additional MA funding is limited. This scholarship has provided me with the necessary financial assistance to fully immerse myself in my studies, engage in extracurricular activities, and make the most of my university experience. “My heart skipped a massive beat when I found out I was accepted. Before opening the email, I was very nervous; however, I am so happy that the nervousness I felt turned into pure joy. The Black Heart Foundation offered me a scholarship unlike anything I have had before. I was so happy, and I thanked God and called my mom immediately. Thank you so much, Black Heart Foundation, for providing me with this grant. This honestly will change my life and allow for much less of a financial burden on me and my parents as I live in one of the most expensive cities in the world, London, as I get a world-class education at Imperial College London. It means I don’t have to work so much and can focus on extracurricular attainments, my university experience, and most importantly, my education. Again, I cannot thank every single member of the Black Heart Foundation enough. I am so appreciative of this grant and the work you do. I feel truly blessed. “I cannot begin to express how grateful I am that Black Heart has seen fit to award me with a Scholarship. Thanks to foundations like theirs, I will be able to continue my education and my pursuit of an academic career. Funding for the Arts and Humanities continues to be scarce in the United Kingdom, an issue that is set to be further exacerbated by ongoing government cuts to the Arts and Humanities Research Councils, which makes external foundations such as Black Heart an increasingly invaluable resource for lower-income students like me. Black Heart helps ensure that education and careers in the Arts and Humanities are for everyone and not just an elite few.”
Sociology | University of Bristol
“Winning The Black Heart Foundation Scholarship is a significant milestone in my educational journey. Coming from Peru, where higher education is an elusive privilege, I felt anxious about securing postgraduate funding to study my MSc Sociology at the University of Bristol, UK. With my socio-economic background and household responsibilities, which greatly limited my savings, it seemed a way too ambitious goal. I persisted for three years, and after doing thorough funding research, I got to apply and secure a University of Bristol scholarship for international students. Still, I needed to complement this with other funding sources to focus on my studies, avoid overworking, and continue engaging in volunteer projects. This scholarship has made all that possible, lessened my financial burden and allowed me to leverage growth opportunities during my time in the UK. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for believing in my potential. This award empowers me not only to achieve my professional and educational aspirations but also to give back to others as you have given to me.”
Social Work | University of Hertforshire
“Despite the difficulties I faced during that time, I was able to maintain my role of co-founder for a youth charity I started 10 years ago. I was also very pleased to successfully complete the first year of my degree, but was very worried about starting my final year because I knew it would be busier than the first with little time to work to cover expenses, write my dissertation, and undertake a placement. I am ever so grateful and thankful to The Black Heart Foundation for this scholarship, as it will give me the opportunity to focus solely on my final major assignments before qualifying as a social worker and pursuing my dream career.”
Chemistry | University of Oxford
“Thank you to the Black Heart foundation for granting me the opportunity to have a level playing field and work towards my degree without the burden of financial worry. I am so thankful to the Black heart foundation for this scholarship, it really means the world to me. Digital Anthropology | UCL
“I am honoured to have been given this opportunity to study my dream course. There are persistent barriers to education for those from working class backgrounds. I studied my undergraduate degree at LSE highly cognizant of this fact. I did not think that I would be awarded another opportunity to study due to the cost involved in taking time off work as well as living costs. It is precisely the obstacles that I have faced in my life that have guided my academic pursuals. I am studying digital anthropology specifically to remove barriers for those from disadvantaged communities. Digital anthropology is the study of the relationship between humans and digital-era technology. I was alarmed to see the reflection of offline power dynamics in the online world. My goal is to do research to this effect and pursue a PhD to further this research. None of this would have been possible without the financial assistance that I have received to do this course.”
Law | University of Reading

It has helped me regain my confidence that I will complete my course and continue my journey of becoming a qualified counsellor. This funding is pivotal in me being able to fulfil my dream and do my best to make therapy more accessible for marginalised communities; additionally, as a Black woman this will allow me to bring more representation within the field. Without this scholarship I would have struggled to self-fund my course fees without additional work, this would have significantly impacted the time I am able to give to my learning and consequently my outcomes. Thank you so much to all at the Black Heart Foundation for choosing me to be one of the people who benefit from this incredible scholarship programme.”

“When I received the email from The Black Heart Foundation saying my application for their scholarship had been successful, I fully cried. The past year had been so incredibly difficult, and I was questioning whether I should continue with my education when I finished my BA. Getting that email felt like a sign that I was doing the right thing for my family and for the people I hoped to help with my research. When I say that The Black Heart Foundation has changed my life, I am not exaggerating in the slightest. Without then, I would not be able to do my MA and, eventually, help other people from underprivileged backgrounds achieve their goals.”

“Gratitude and joy are the words which come to mind whenever I think of the Black Heart Foundation. I am a self-funded PhD student with 18 months to the finishing line. I was thoroughly enjoying my PhD research when I hit a financial rock last year. So, I had to seek external funds for my PhD. Over the next few months, my initial optimistic search for grants, bursaries, and scholarships became a debilitating exercise of daily crossings out, strikethroughs and deletions. At the same time as I searched for funds, I was reminded weekly by my university’s efficient automated system to adhere to the “enrolment deadline date”. Of course, meeting the enrolment deadline would trigger the dreaded invoice for payment. By the time I found out about the Black Heart Foundation I had exhausted all avenues of potential financial support. There was no Plan B.
Imagine my sheer delight when I received an email from the Black Heart Foundation confirming that they had chosen to give me a scholarship! This scholarship will contribute to the completion of my PhD and will enable me to continue my public engagement work at the post-doc stage. I’m honoured, joyous and grateful to have received a scholarship from the Black Heart Foundation. I thank you all. I am your willing ambassador for life!.”

“I am in disbelief at the generosity of the Black Heart Foundation and extremely grateful to be able to call myself a Black Heart Scholar! Financial stress can often prevent you from being able to fully dedicate yourself to your studies and ambitions. Through this scholarship, I will now be able to commit to my education while also pursuing my aspiration to contribute to society and give back to the community through volunteer work. Medicine | University of Aberdeen
“When I received an email notification from The Black Heart Foundation my heart was racing. Once I read the outcome, I was extremely overjoyed. Attending one of the worse schools in the country I thought getting into medical school was going to be hardest part of the journey. However, this wasn’t the case. The hardest part was paying the tuition fee cost as this is my second degree. Working well over the recommended hours the medical school sets out made it very difficult to fully concentrate on my studies. Moreover, having to work over 50 hours during my summer holidays meant I never got a chance to recuperate after a tough academic year. Therefore, I’m very appreciative of the work of The Black Heart Foundation. It’ll greatly help reduce the constant stress that comes with paying your own tuition fees and travel. It also allows me to get more involved with university societies and concentrate on my final medical school exams.”
Mathematics | University of Oxford
“I am immensely grateful for the incredible opportunity bestowed upon me by The Black Heart Scholarship Programme. The Foundation’s unwavering dedication to empowering individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds resonates deeply with me. Having to work long hours during my breaks from university after an intense 8-weeks, was both physically and mentally challenging and was unfortunately hindering my studies. Hence the foundation’s support not only alleviates financial burdens but also ignites a newfound determination within me to wholeheartedly focus on my education, and in doing so, serve as an inspiration for future generations facing similar challenges. Having spent the last couple of years tirelessly seeking scholarships I cannot even begin to put into words the feeling I got when opening my acceptance letter. I will forever be grateful to The Black Heart Foundation and will ensure to one day give back however I can.”

I am studying Philosophy & Politics, and hope to use this degree to the greatest extent inside and outside of the classroom.”

Coming from a low-income, single-parent home, I’ve always felt like I was playing catch-up with my more well-off peers. I can’t find the words to express how grateful I am for this opportunity. I promise to make the most of it and pay it forward to others facing similar challenges. Thank you, Blackheart Foundation, for believing in me and investing in my future. It means the world to me.”

The bursary has also alleviated the need to work part-time, alongside my course, which has been challenging completing alongside placement and studying full-time. After struggling with some health issues during my time at University, I’m really grateful that I can now prioritise my health more, due to financial pressures being reduced.”
Film and Television | The University of Edinburgh
“I applied to The Black Heart Foundation when I was offered a place for a Semester of Exchange to an art University in Vancouver, Canada. As a working-class person, I believe that financial status should not be a barrier to career progression; so when I got the rare offer to study abroad, I knew I had to take it.
I have always aimed to diversify the film industry from the inside out, and I believe that my education is a powerful tool to do so. I have often made projects surrounding socio-political themes, and am constantly striving to break through glass ceilings regarding my race, class, and gender. This educational experience is a real-life way that I am aiming to promote change; and through the support of The Black Heart Foundation, I will be able to do this. Given the lack of diversity in the art industry – tangentially to the lack of diversity in higher academia, I feel doubly inspired to use this opportunity to widen the platform of marginalised voices. Thus, receiving this scholarship will undeniably propel me into my career – in a way that would otherwise be impossible.”

“Receiving the scholarship from the Black Heart Foundation has alleviated my financial burdens and will allow me to focus wholeheartedly on my studies. Their belief in my potential has been a tremendous source of encouragement, reinforcing my commitment to making meaningful contributions to the field of oncology and cancer care. I will now achieve this because they have made my Master’s in Therapeutic Radiography possible. The field of oncology has always captivated me, and during my undergraduate years studying Biomedical Materials Science I sought to evaluate oral cancer cells on a biochemical level in the lab. Witnessing the challenges faced by individuals battling cancer inspired me to delve deeper into the clinical side, as I realised the pivotal role it plays in providing effective care and treatment strategies. I am immensely grateful for the trust and confidence placed in me and ultimately I hope to make a positive impact in the lives of cancer patients.”

This financial support will benefit me throughout this academic year, allowing me to fully immerse myself in my studies and pursue my extracurricular activities without the burden of financial constraints. I only became aware of the Black Heart Foundation scholarship during my second year of studying. At that time, I hesitated to apply as I was uncertain about the outcome. However, now that I have taken the leap and applied during my final year of studies, I wholeheartedly encourage every eligible individual to do the same. The application process is remarkably simple making it accessible to a wide range of students. I want to express my deepest gratitude to the Black Heart Foundation for their belief in me and their commitment to supporting students like myself. Pharmacognosy | University of Strathclyde
“It is difficult to put in words how truly grateful I am to have been awarded a scholarship by the Black Heart Foundation! Having grown up in a poor, single-parent household, I was determined to succeed and build a life where my family can prosper. However, overcoming the tremendous odds set against me would not have been possible without the generous support of organizations such as the Black Heart Foundation.
This is because despite several years of saving and securing grants to fund my PhD, working part-time during my studies and stretching every pound as far as possible, I found myself approaching my final year of studies with dwindling funds and tremendous financial burden. Deferring the completion of my PhD was a prospect I faced. That’s when the Black Heart Foundation stepped in. Staying true to their mission to improve educational access to those from under-privileged backgrounds and in low resource environments, the Black Heart Foundation relieved the financial burden I faced and put me over the top on the final stretch of my course when it was needed most. Moreover, the Foundation relieved my anxiety caused by the fear of running short, and provided me with the peace of mind needed to complete my research.”

“ I was completely shocked and happy to receive the Black Heart Foundations Scholarship, the last 2 years of medical school have been some of the most challenging, especially being a graduate of an undergraduate medical course. The accessibility to financial aid is very limited and has put a severe, mental, emotional, and physical strain that affected my engagement in the course. Thanks to the Black Heart Foundation, they have gifted me one of the most valuable things- time. Now I will have time to focus on my degree while engaging in various opportunities that will contribute to my pursuit of becoming a well-rounded Doctor.”

Law | University of Manchester
“I am immensely grateful to have been awarded the Black Heart Foundation Scholarship. Entering the final year of my law degree brought forth a multitude of challenges, ones that my personal circumstances had not adequately prepared me for. This scholarship has afforded me the invaluable opportunity to wholeheartedly devote myself to my studies, and subsequently, to my aspiration of venturing into the legal profession. Throughout my years at university, I have encountered numerous financial barriers to entry within the legal sector that I was neither mentally nor financially equipped to overcome. Furthermore, navigating the terrain as a black man in a predominantly white academic (and professional) environment has presented its unique set of challenges, aggravated by my uncontrollable circumstances and personal identity. The newfound ease with which I am able to approach my degree is a foreign feeling that until experienced is unfathomable , I hadn’t realised the looming anxiety that my issues caused and the Black Heart Foundation has relieved me of this completely . Again , I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the Black Heart Foundation. The impact of their work on countless lives is immeasurable, and I am confident that they will continue their groundbreaking work in the years to come.”

“I am beyond grateful to have been granted a scholarship by The Black Heart Foundation. With this scholarship, I intend to complete my master’s course on Refugee and Forced Migration Studies at the University of Oxford and take the first steps towards a career in the humanitarian sector. More specifically, the scholarship will enable me to continue my studies on the challenges that intersectionality poses towards those accessing humanitarian aid in contexts of violence and persecution. Being from a disadvantaged socioeconomic background, as well as the first of the family to attend university, being a student at the University of Oxford is an astounding achievement not without huge financial implications. The scholarship has put my mind at ease in being able to complete the course without further economic worries for myself or my family. “I am immensely grateful for Blackheart Foundation’s generosity. This funding has made possible my participation in a course, a university, that always felt so far beyond my reach financially and socially as a working class queer and trans person. Creating and writing is an essential part of my life, and it’s amazing to have access to a space that challenges and nourishes that. Studying at the Royal College of Art is something I’ve wanted since I first knew I wanted to be an artist.

“The Black Heart Foundation has truly changed my life. I knew that going to university would be a costly investment but I also didn’t want to compromise my religious beliefs. The Black Heart Foundation has thankfully allowed me to pursue a subject that I’m immensely passionate about without compromising my faith or putting excess stress on myself. Before I decided to go to university I knew that I had to figure out how I would manage paying for my tuition fees alongside studying full time, I did a lot of research and the conclusion that I came to was a little grim. Originally, the plan was that I would have to work more hours than I’d be able to handle while studying (which, unfortunately, many in my position have already done) but I am beyond grateful that my reality won’t be as stressful. This scholarship will not only allow me to focus on my studies but also focus on my extracurriculars and passion projects as well, it gives me room to continue helping others without stretching myself too thin. This Foundation truly is a beacon of hope for people like me, your faith and your socio-economic background should not be a hindrance to pursuing further education and the Black Heart Foundation has done such amazing work to prove this. I hope to use the generosity that the Foundation has shown me to develop my skills and help communities to the best of my ability.”
