MA Music Composition | University of Manchester
“I am so grateful to the Black Heart Foundation for awarding me the scholarship and giving me the opportunity to pursue my studies in music composition. With the support of the Foundation, the financial strain of taking my master’s course has been minimised which will allow me to spend more time on my studies and composing music beyond the scope of the course to build my portfolio and prepare me for a future career in composition. Furthermore, the scholarship has given me the opportunity to spend more time delivering music education through teaching online piano and violin lessons to students across the world. I would like to say a huge thank you to the Black Heart Foundation for their support and belief in me and in the arts.”
PhD Environmental Science | University of York
“I am incredibly grateful for the support of the Black Heart Foundation which will enable me to complete my PhD in Environmental Science at the University if York. My project is based in Zanzibar and focuses on how experiences and insights from rural communities can be better represented in sustainable land use planning. I applied to the Black Heart Foundation in the final year of my course because I became a first time mother. Whilst I was previously able to meet my own personal costs, becoming a parent during my studies meant I suddenly had financial responsibilities that extended beyond my own capacity. I felt determined to complete my project as this would enable me to pursue a career in environment and development research. However, I did not want this to come at the short term cost of my family and had to ensure that if I continued with my studies that I could provide for the needs of my daughter. I came across the Black Heart Foundation whilst searching for possible grants that might help in my situation. When I received confirmation of the award I was extremely happy and relieved. It will enable me to complete my final year of study whilst also meeting the basic needs of my daughter and me. Without the support I would have had to consider withdrawing from my studies to find employment. I now feel confident that I can make a valuable contribution to my field of study whilst balancing my new role as a parent.”
“Being awarded this scholarship has been a great help on my journey towards a better future. This additional support has therefore allowed me to fund expenses that add intrinsic value to my life. I hope to add this sort of value to the world, one day. Now, I will be able to invest time and effort into being academically successful, engaged and focused on my future aspirations. To be placed in a position where I can limit the stresses of additional work, to sustain my student lifestyle, is truly a blessing. I am eternally grateful to the Black Heart Foundation for believing and taking a chance in me. Thank you!”
Professional Acting | LAMDA
“The Black Heart Foundation has truly been my lifeline. I cannot express how grateful I am to have been helped my The Black Heart Foundation. Acting has always been a passion of mine that I have worked exceedingly hard towards. Being able to train at LAMDA has been a goal I set since I was around 10 years of age and without this support, something I simply could not have achieved. As someone with ASD, change can be quite challenging, but The Black Heart Foundation have really helped to make this new chapter a smooth and exciting journey that I will never forget. The financial assistance has ensured that I can focus on my studies and gain the most out of my training. This level of generosity is something I could have only dreamt of and I am proud to represent The Black Heart Foundation as a Scholar.”
MPHYS Physics | University of Exeter
“I am someone who believes anyone should be able to access and thrive in higher education, despite their socio-economic background or upbringing. My journey to higher education has not been an easy one but through support of peers, self-motivation and the generosity of organisations like the Black Heart Foundation. I will be able to devote my time towards my studies and afford better technology to aid in my degree. The scholarship is representation of what one is able to achieve provided they work for it. It is essential in helping those from lower-income households in deconstruction the financial wall of university. Relighting my spark go further with my studies and inspire me to become a role model. This will have long lasting effects on me and I would not be able to have realise this without the BHF.”
University of Roehampton | Early Childhood Studies
“The Black Heart Foundation has provided me with an incredible opportunity, and I would like to sincerely thank them for this. As a student who lives and works in London, this scholarship has been a huge blessing with enabling me to focus my efforts more on studying. Without such funding in place, I would have had to focus my efforts on working full-time in order to maintain my living expenses, which I had to do during last year’s lockdown period. This opportunity has helped me to further my journey in pursuing a career in Youth Work. I am currently studying Early Childhood Studies at the University of Roehampton and finishing up a Youth Work Practice course at the same time through my employment with Hackney CVS. Through this profession, I aspire to be instrumental in the change and policies in place that influence community and voluntary sector that I work in with underrepresented individuals from Black and Minority Ethnic backgrounds who are sometimes unaware of opportunities such as this, as well as facing additional inequalities in wider society. Once again, thank you to the Black Heart Foundation for giving me this opportunity!”
University of Exeter | Economics
“I was brought to tears when I found out that I received a scholarship from the Black Heart Foundation for my Masters programme. Not only did the scholarship provide me with the opportunity to pursue my postgraduate studies, it provided me with the confidence that I too am deserving of the opportunity to study further. It has made me more determined to succeed, so that I too can give back. The Black Heart Foundation scholarship will have a life-changing impact on myself and my daughter’s life. As a single mother from a patriarchal society, I was told ‘No, you can’t’ repeatedly. That I could not pursue studying further. That I could not strive to provide a better life for my daughter and me. To anyone in a similar situation, please believe that Yes, you can. You can overcome the challenges. You can attain the opportunity to study further, despite the significant obstacles. I am so exceptionally grateful that the Black Heart Foundation believed in me and provided me with the ability to study further and to support my daughter single-handedly. It was never going to be easy, but with the scholarship provided by the Black Heart Foundation it was made possible. To other potential students, especially to other single parents, don’t stop believing in yourself. Know that you can achieve your potential.”
The University of Law | LPC
“I would like to thank the Black Heart Foundation (BHF) for awarding me a scholarship that has eased the financial strain of having to pay for the Legal Practice Course. When I applied for your scholarship, I was a month away from commencing my studies and was hopeful that a miracle would happen to help part-finance my course fees. The Black Heart Foundation is the vessel that provided that miracle. I am grateful to your charity for supporting my journey to become a solicitor in England & Wales. I am excited for the day that I can pay it forward, both financially and by sharing my unique story with others. Thank you for this amazing opportunity!”
University of Essex | Advertising, Marketing and the Media
“Receiving The Black Heart Foundation Scholarship has greatly impacted the trajectory of the way I am now thinking about my Masters programme. It has given me peace of mind that I have one less worry by way of finances, and it will be so great to just focus on my studies and being the best that I can be. The Scholarship came through at a time where I did not know what would be happening with my finances and was just trusting God – so the Black Heart Foundation are part of my miracle. Thank you Black Heart, you are doing amazing things for young people like myself!”
Salford University Business School | International Events Management
“I will forever be grateful to the Black Heart Foundation for their incredible generosity and support. 2020-21 was a difficult time for us all. A pandemic related redundancy was initially a terrifying prospect and I felt such uncertainty regarding my future. I had long wanted to return to university and the time felt right to launch myself back into full time education to improve my career prospects. When researching postgraduate study I soon realised the barriers faced for people from working class backgrounds and without this award it would be unobtainable for me. I began my MSc in International Events Management in 2021 and my career aspirations feel within reaching distance. I feel determined and motivated to succeed in a way I never have experienced before. I will always be driven to work hard because of the Black Heart Foundation’s faith in me. Thank you so much for giving me this opportunity. In the future I hope to be able to pay forward the incredible kindness and offer opportunities to those who may face disadvantage and/or barriers.”
Law and Business Management | University of Warwick
“I am extremely grateful to be awarded this scholarship. This will not only enable me to overcome my difficult financial situation, but it will also allow me to concentrate on my degree rather than worrying about my finances. Being a student from a low-income household has always made balancing education and finances difficult; but, with this scholarship, the economic burden will be lifted, and I can now focus on my goal of becoming a successful lawyer. Thank you to the Black Heart Foundation for eliminating financial barriers and empowering students like myself to pursue our dreams.”
Voice studies teaching and coaching | The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama
“I am so delighted to be receiving support from The Black Heart Foundation. My name is Adam Rhys-Charles and I have been working professionally in musical theatre for the past ten years. When the pandemic struck, I was touring with a production and, like countless others in the industry, the contract was cut short and we were plunged into a world without theatre, our main source of income as artists. The impact of the pandemic has been detrimental to the livelihood of so many professions within theatre: directors, choreographers, stage management, dressers, sound engineers, carpenters, front of house staff and actors to name just a few. I decided to utilise this uncertain time to enrich my craft and provide myself with more opportunities going forward in the world. I was successful in gaining a place at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama on the prestigious Voice Studies Masters Programme. It was my experience with some of the best voice coaches in the industry during my career that inspired me to delve into this world in order to help people find and use their voices on and off stage in liberatory ways. The Black Heart Foundation’s support will in no small way keep my head above water during this time when I have been unable to work whilst investing in my future. I am eternally grateful and humbled to be among a group of wonderful people that the foundation has so generously aided during these challenging times. Thank you BHF!”
Human and Social Politics | University of Cambridge
“Being a recipient of the Black Heart Foundation scholarship has lifted a massive weight off of my shoulders. The constant pressure of my enormous workload, whilst having to adapt to an environment that was totally foreign to me, was only accentuated by having to worry about my finances. The scholarship has eliminated this extensive financial burden that would have otherwise hindered my ability to seamlessly progress through my degree. I feel as though one of the most profound benefits the scholarship has had, is eliminating the feelings of inadequacy and anxiety that stem from the notions that Cambridge is a place where people like myself do not belong due to ethnicity and class. It has assisted me in overcoming the sense of ‘impostor syndrome’, providing the reassurance that my background doesn’t have to be a hindrance and that the prospects of success are endless despite my respective situation.”
Education, Policy and international development | University of Cambridge
“I am honestly still in shock with being offered the scholarship, I remember applying and being overly stressed with my financial stability during my first term of university. Coming from a low income household and seeing my mother struggling to financially cater to me and my siblings needs has always motivated me to break from the cycle and give back through doing the best I can in my education. For many, growing up in a deprived area it is very common to see children giving up on their dreams due to financial instability. The Black heart foundation has a specific criteria which expresses the frustration many growing teens face when applying and going to university. I study education, policy and international development, and I know from first hand experience It is hard trying to juggle your private life, while also trying to prove your passion in the subject you study, all because of your financial status. This offer will allow me to focus on my studies and give me the best possible head start when looking for graduate jobs after I finish university. I want to thank the Black heart foundation and the trustees for their financial aid and their trust in my capabilities.”
Level 4 Therapeutic Counselling | Sakoon Counselling Institute
“Words cannot describe how grateful I am to the Black Heart Foundation for believing in me and supporting my journey to becoming a Counsellor. Being a woman who has gone through the mental health system from a young age, I had witnessed firsthand the demand for support amongst the youth. This sparked my passion to help others just like me and that was when I embarked on the journey. Now, with thanks to BHF I can plan for a future of helping women and girls in need of the same support. I hope to turn my past experiences into something positive and use it as fuel to be the best Counsellor I can be. The scholarship has not only removed me of my financial burden but also granted me hope, confidence and happiness. BHF reminded me that coming from a disadvantaged background does not mean that you can’t succeed and have a dream. With thanks to the scholarship, I can achieve that dream and I will forever be grateful.”
Global Migration and Social Justice | University of Glasgow
“I would like to thank the Black Heart Foundation for this opportunity. The scholarship has eased my experience of furthering my studies in MSc Global Migrations and Social Justice. Coming from a working-class background, I never thought pursuing a postgraduate education would be possible. The scholarship has reduced the financial burden which will allow me to focus on academic, social, and other commitments. Pursuing my master’s degree will allow me to take the next step in working in the field of migration and I hope one day that I can repay Black Heart Foundation for investing and supporting me. Thank you again for this opportunity.”
Electronic and Information Engineering | Imperial College
“When I received the confirmation email that I had been awarded a scholarship from The Black Heart Foundation I was overjoyed. This award can really change someone’s life. It evens out the playing field and gives the people from less fortunate circumstances a chance to succeed. This award has made it possible for me to fully focus on my studies as an Imperial College London engineering student. I want to continue my degree in hopes of developing smart technologies that can leave a positive impact on the world and I wouldn’t have been able to do that without the Black Heart Foundation’s scholarship, I would have been forced to work alongside my intensive studies and this would have put be at a large disadvantage compared to my peers. I can’t thank the Foundation enough as they have provided me with invaluable support that will enable me to succeed.”
Mathematics with International Study: Data and Research | Nottingham University (Current placement, City University of Hong Kong)
“I would like to express my gratitude to the Black Heart Foundation for believing in me and awarding me this scholarship. In 2020, I was given the amazing opportunity to spend a year studying in Hong Kong. Given my economic background and the added pressure of the pandemic on finances, I was aware that my experience in Hong Kong might see some limits and that I would have to seek additional financial support if I didn’t want to miss out on what I had worked so hard for. I was extremely fortunate to have come across Black Heart and I can’t put into words how much relief I felt when I was granted the scholarship. I am now able to make the most of my time on my study abroad trip, not limited by financial constraints. I have always been encouraged to aim high and dream big, and the BHF have truly enabled me to do this. I look forward to representing the Black Heart Foundation as a scholar throughout the rest of my journey and degree. Thank you so much!”
Civil Law | Oxford University
“I am incredibly indebted to the Black Heart Foundation for awarding me a scholarship. This scholarship has allowed me the peace of mind to unreservedly focus on my studies. Without this award, I would be unable to support my living or accommodation costs, which would have made it impossible for me to complete my degree. As such, easing my financial burdens has not only enabled me to continue pursuing my goal of becoming a commercial barrister but provided a powerful morale boost to maintain my focus on the journey. That’s why I’m keen to give back to this Foundation in the near future and help others facing similar circumstances.”
Teacher Training | University of Bolton
“In short securing the scholarship from the Black Heart Foundation means everything to me securing the next part of my journey in education. Being a member of the African/Caribbean community, I have been witnessing the disenfranchisement of our young adults. I have been involved in numerous community projects with aims and objectives intended to educate our young adults making them aware of the various life paths ahead of them in their journey. Despite efforts many of our young adults in particular young males have become disillusioned with the education system which has continuously failed them and as a result led many on the wrong path with many falling foul of the criminal justice system and sadly many losing their life. My sole objective on this journey is to redress the balance and the most effective way to do this in my opinion is to become part of the education system as a teacher. As a black teacher with only one agenda that is to support and assist young adults from our community in particular those from the B.A.M.E community and those from disadvantage backgrounds. In our communities our young adults have been excluded from school at disproportionate levels according to figures released in so being excluded from the education system. They end up in the pupil referral unit where they are forgotten and the emphasis on achievement disappears. Here I have witnessed young adults with low self esteem as they drift their way out of the education. The impact of lives affected by these scholarships goes far beyond affecting just one person. The energy and drive of those beneficiaries can affect other in a positive way. Thank you, Black Heart Foundation.”
Dance, Musical theatre, drama and singing | The Wilkes Academy
“Hi, I am Taylor and I am from Waltham Abbey in Essex. During my final year at School, I was encouraged by the Head of Performing Arts to audition for Performing Arts School. Although I was apprehensive, I decided to go ahead and was surprised when I was received offers at every school together with scholarships to cover my fees. I was offered a place at The Wilkes Academy of Performing Arts in Swindon, which was my top choice school, and I was awarded a full scholarship. Although I was excited about the offer, I was worried about covering my living expenses as I would be moving away from home. So, with my mum’s help, we applied to The Black Heart Foundation for a scholarship. After speaking to my grandparents, they offered to help me with my living expenses for the time being. When I heard from Foundation, I could not believe it. It was a wonderful feeling that they wanted to help me so I could continue with my training in the Performing Arts as it means so much to me. I have never been overtly academic but I have always been artistic and it’s wonderful that a Foundation like The Black Hearts are willing to support students like me so they can continue to follow on their chosen career path. Since starting at The Wilkes Academy of Performing Arts, I have learnt so much more in all areas of the industry and my training already has helped me be recognised by some top Casting Directors and with the Foundations support I will be able to continue with my training and I will ensure I use this opportunity to the best of my ability. When I have completed my training, I intend on going to the US to study further and with the Foundations support I am another step closer to this goal. It’s wonderful that the Foundation are willing to help students like me who what to train in the Arts but may not be given the same opportunities without having to accumulate substantial debts. I am so grateful for their support with my journey, and I will ensure I continue to work hard to reach my dreams and I thank you for believing me.”
Music and music education | Royal Northen College of Music
“It also has given me a sense of hope and positivity that the foundation believes that I can succeed in the music industry. As a classical violinist form a working-class background, I have always had to work many hours just to afford to stay at university and have felt disadvantaged for this reason. This has taken away much valuable study time. With the BHF’s support, I am now even more motivated to excel in my field, and to prove to younger musicians from disadvantaged backgrounds that it is possible to achieve your dreams if you put your mind to it. I will always remember this incredibly kind gesture. I aim to spread the word of this amazing foundation and credit them in my future achievements. ”
Media and Communication | Nottingham University
“I want to say a massive thank you to the Black Heart Foundation for this amazing opportunity. Being a recipient of this scholarship allows me to focus on my studies instead of working excessive hours to support myself financially. This scholarship also will enable me to continue my studies and partake in various unpaid or paid roles within the media industry. I strive to demonstrate the same generosity and kindness the Foundation has shown me by continuing to maths tutor and help other disadvantaged students gain confidence and prevent them from falling behind on their studies due to the pandemic. Additionally, over the summer, I plan to give back to the local community as I know that this year has been a very difficult year for everyone. I plan to work in the Refugee Centre in Nottingham to give back and help others who may also be in need. I am grateful to the Black Heart Foundation for recognising my potential and helping me reach my career goals of becoming a Creative Director. My career ambitions are now becoming a reality. Thank you! ”
MSc Clinical Embryology | University of Oxford
“Firstly, I would like to convey how inspired I am by the Black Heart Foundation through their work of helping students, regardless of their background, to perform to the best of their ability. The stress of hunting for finances to fund my passion left me disheartened and hopeless, it was a constant internal battle of reminding myself why being able to study at Oxford is important. Representation and equal opportunities are imperative and necessary for the growth of my community. I am deeply grateful that the Black Heart Foundation have decided to invest in me. It further reiterates the significance of investing in yourself and believing that you can exceed the boxes your circumstances create for you. This scholarship will allow me to focus directly on the academic goals ahead, it has encouraged the growth of my inner confidence and has inspired me to want to carry forward the central initiative of this foundation for future generations.”
Automotive Mechatronics | Cranfield University
“I feel truly blessed to be a recipient of the Black Heart Foundation Scholarship. As the first in my family to not only go to university, but to go on to take on a masters, I am relieved to know that I can reduce some of the financial burdens which accumulate when pursuing higher education. With this weight lifted off my shoulders, I can now concentrate on venturing into an exciting area in STEM which has a lack of black women present. Automotive mechatronics is one of the newer types of engineering which combines several different fields like computing and electronics. Many students taking on such a degree will find themselves well versed in some areas better than others. Having had developed a more mechanical background, I take advantage of any fee time to fill in the gaps in my knowledge for this degree. I hope to inspire young people with similar backgrounds like myself, coming from a single parent low income household that wishes to pursue a career in STEM. It warms my heart to know that there are people and organisations that are out there, willing to provide you a helping hand when it may seem one’s ambitions are financially out of reach. I am proud to be a Black Heart Scholar and to represent an organisation which supports individuals like myself to elevate us closer to our goals and aspirations.”

“Words cannot grasp how proud and thankful to The Black Heart Foundation for providing me with a scholarship. This scholarship acts as an instrumental component in my path to obtaining my masters. The scholarship totally eradicated every financial burden associated with my degree. My hope is that with my degree and experience, I can give back to my community. I will continue to strive towards achieving greatness and using my skills and platform as an avenue for the younger generation to succeed. So, thank you to The Black Heart Foundation for assisting me on this wonderful journey!”
DPhil in International Development | University of Oxford
“It is difficult to fully articulate how grateful I am to The Black Heart Foundation for presenting me with this opportunity. Being awarded this scholarship means that I am relieved from crippling financial insecurity and related anxiety. Upon receiving my DPhil offer, I was overwhelmed with worry about how I would finance my accommodation and living costs in Oxford. The city is notoriously expensive, and the precarity of the COVID-19 pandemic made it extremely difficult to find a stable part-time job to help supplement costs. I am eternally grateful for the Foundation’s support and generosity, and I am inspired by their commitment to making education accessible. One day, I hope to continue with the Foundation’s great work.”
Vocal Studies, Music | Trinity Laban Conservatories of Music and Dance
“I would like to express my utmost gratitude to the Black Heart Foundation for supporting my postgraduate studies with such a generous scholarship. As a classical singer, undertaking a Master’s degree at conservatoire was an important step to take for developing my vocal technique, making those all-important network contacts and furthering my professional singing career through a range of performance and coaching opportunities. Fees for these courses are known to be expensive and the scholarship I have received from the Black Heart Foundation has provided a sense of financial security and valued investment in my career development, enabling me to focus solely on completing my studies to the highest standard. At this particularly uncertain time and with a significant loss in professional earnings which would fund my studies, I am so grateful to have received this financial support from an organisation which actively works to remove barriers to learning and provide individuals with access to high-quality, inspirational education. I am proud to be a Black Heart Scholar and I can’t thank the trustees enough for supporting me and enabling me to continue pursuing my professional development.”
Medicine | Kings College London
“Words lack the ability to convey the immense gratitude and relief that I felt when I received the Black Heart Scholarship. The complete alleviation of a monetary burden will allow me to complete my degree of Medicine without compromise or setback and to enjoy a university experience of one without a constant financial strain. This scholarship has not only changed my life but will hopefully help me change the lives of others, letting me continue to with
local outreach and international deployment projects instead of working as much to help fund my education, letting me pay forward the kindness and generosity I was shown by this initiative.”
French with Arabic | University of Warwick
“I am beyond grateful for the amazing opportunity that The Black Heart Foundation have provided me with. With my final year coming up, now is the time more than ever to put my time towards my degree. Trying to find a balance between maintaining a social and academic life at university was already hard enough in my first two years at university, as well as having to deal with stressful financial situations. Now, with the support of the Black Heart Foundation, I will be able to allocate my energy towards my studies and preparing for a career after. I cannot express my gratitude enough. This gift will serve as a motivation to give back where I can in the future and to help students that are in positions that I was once in. Once again, thank you so much to the Black Heart Foundation!”

I am incredibly grateful to the Black Heart Foundation for their support in enabling me to pursue postgraduate study and continue to strive for excellence in all my academic endeavours in Medicine. Through this, I hope to be able to offer back the support I have received here to others, to enable them to achieve their potential.”
MA Criminology | Birmingham University
“I was overcome with happiness when I received the news; I had been awarded a scholarship. I would like to thank the Black Heart Foundation for its investment and belief in my abilities. It has meant a tremendous deal to me for their acknowledgment of my achievements and passion to succeed. As a mature postgraduate student with children, sustaining my studies has come with its adversities. This award me will ease some of the financial constraints that we can all identify with in higher education. I feel overjoyed that for the last few months of my studies and during one of the most challenging and difficult times to complete my education, financially, the burden will be lessened, and I can now focus more on my studies with greater ability to provide for myself and family. I feel extremely delighted and appreciated by the beneficiaries at the foundation that they recognized my need for an award for which, I will be eternally grateful. I look forward to the day I can invest in others the way the foundation has invested in me. A huge thank you to the Black Heart Foundation for recognizing and helping people in diverse positions during the pursuit and accomplishment of their dreams.”
Psychology | University of Birmingham
“I have always wanted to become a living example that financial strain is not indicative of academic success and that prosperity is achievable to all. Being awarded the Black Heart Foundation scholarship has allowed me to embody that exact statement. I never thought I could be a recipient of such an amazing opportunity, but I am so thankful that the Black Heart Foundation has gifted me with such a wonderful blessing. Throughout my university experience, monetary issues have caused financial strain, become a source of constant worry and a detriment to my university grades. The peace of mind and relief this award has provided is indescribable. This opportunity will allow me to complete my final year of university and graduate with optimism for my future career prospects without financial strain. I hope that I’m a source of hope that your personal circumstances can and will get better. I can’t fully express my gratitude and appreciation for the Black Heart Foundation into words but I am so thankful that they provide an opportunity for disadvantaged, bright individuals to defy their circumstances and curate the life that they have always dreamed to obtain. I am proud to be a beneficiary of such an award and I am happy to know that this opportunity will aid, support and relieve so many more individuals. I would like to thank the Black Heart Foundation for such an amazing blessing, and I am forever grateful.”

With this scholarship, I will be able to become more involved with university life, joining in extra-curricular and societies, and most importantly be able to achieve the best grades I possibly can. Because of the Black Heart Foundation scholarship, I will not have to compromise my studies in order to be able to afford living expenses at university. English | King’s College
“I feel honoured to be awarded with the BHF scholarship. Being an ethnic minority and coming from a disadvantaged socio-economic background, I’ve faced many obstacles in furthering my education through a lack of resources and opportunities. Getting this scholarship has alleviated the financial burden from myself and my family so I can wholeheartedly focus on my studies without having to concern myself about working whilst at university in order to pay for my expenses, which would have otherwise hindered me from achieving my fullest academic potential. Through their support towards my studies, the BHF has restored the confidence within me that I can achieve my dreams regardless of the setbacks I have been born with. It has empowered me to work towards the life I have always dreamed about, and to inspire others to do the same through my words and writing. Words cannot express how blessed and grateful I feel, your kindness and consideration will not be forgotten and I hope to make God and the foundation proud!”
International Law | Queen Mary’s University
“I am very grateful and thankful to The Black Hearth Foundation for this wonderful opportunity to further my studies at Queen Mary, University of London. I am beyond excited to explore many opportunities available for me after a completion of my course without having to worry about any financial burdens. This scholarship will enable me to complete my LLM course in International Business law and working towards achieving my goal and dreams of becoming an excellent legal practitioner. Without this funding, I would probably have had to work full-time to support myself which would have had a huge impact on my study. I am firmly believed that everyone should be able to have access on education regardless of their social-economic backgrounds. Thus, I will forever appreciate the work that The Black Heart Foundation does by investing and supporting in students like me and others from ethnic minority and underprivileged backgrounds to continue believing in themselves that with faith and hope anything is possible.”
Dance and Movement Therapy | Goldsmith University
“I’m overwhelmingly grateful to be a recipient of a Black Heart Foundation scholarship. With their belief, support and gracious investment, I now have the opportunity to truly pursue my goals. To say that my dream came true when I was accepted onto the Masters in Dance Movement Psychotherapy, is an understatement. However, the excitement and pride was immediately undermined by the financial anxiety that loomed. Coming from a low-income background, it was unrealistic to strive to complete a Postgrad and with the effects of COVID-19 it made the prospect seem even less feasible. But now I am relived to be able to proceed and I will be able to dedicate all my time to studying and working at my clinical placement without having the huge financial burden. Had it not been for The Black Heart Foundation, I know my Uni experience would be entirely different! Informed by the skills I learn on the Masters, I will contribute to meeting the increased demand in psychotherapy treatments and use an inclusive, alternative and accessible approach to improve the wellbeing of the country. I strongly believe in carrying the BHF’s ethos with me through my career to support those who are facing financial difficulties – this is a huge barrier to people receiving therapy and that needs to change. Soon I will start to make a big difference to people’s lives within our own communities, so this makes such a massive difference to the lives of other people, too. I am eternally grateful.”
Physicians Assistant | University of Sheffield
“Until finding the Black Heart Foundation, I had not come across an organisation that seemed to truly understand the hardship faced by students such as myself when it comes to accessing the resources needed to reach their aspirations. The deflating feeling when you realise you just can’t afford it – no matter how many extra hours you work or A grades you achieve – can make you question if all your hard work and dedication was for nothing. However, to have been granted the opportunity to finish my studies by such an amazing organisation has left me feeling blessed beyond words. Due to the Black Heart Foundation, I can complete my final year and work as a Physician Associate in the NHS, which is quite literally my dream job. Furthermore, not having to worry about any impending repayments for a private loan has relieved an incredible amount of stress and allowed me to solely focus on (and enjoy!) my studies. I cannot begin to thank the trustees enough for everything they have done and continue to do for students across the world – it is absolutely life-changing.”
Molecular and Celluar Bio Science | Imperial College
“The Black Heart Foundation has truly made a positive impact on my academic journey. I am now pursuing graduate training to further my knowledge in new research areas, particularly in Immunology and Microbiology and it’s applications in therapeutic strategies for human diseases. As a first-generation, asian, and the first person in my entire family to obtain a masters I am grateful for all the mentors that have guided me through this journey. Although I am not confined to these identities, they have shaped me as the person I am today. I hope to serve as a role model and example to other young girls out there pursuing science by continuing to advocate for diversity in STEM and mental health. This scholarship has helped breakdown the financial barriers and eased the financial burden placed upon myself so I can focus on my degree. Thank you again Black Heart Foundation!!”
LPC | University of Law
“It’s an honour and a blessing to have been awarded the Black Heart Foundation scholarship. At the time of applying for my master’s I did not realise how financially unrealistic this decision may have been. Having been accepted on the course and being one step closer to my dream career I was elated and hoped to figure it out. However, due to COVID-19 I was put in a financial predicament. Being awarded this scholarship alleviated the intense financial burden of studying the Legal Practice course, which can often set back people of less privileged backgrounds. I am grateful to the Black Heart Foundation and the trustees for investing in me and my career aspirations.”
Cancer | UCL
“I would like to extend my sincerest gratitude to the Black Heart foundation for granting me the opportunity to become a Black Heart scholar. Before applying for this award, I was quite worried that my years working alongside my undergraduate studies will still not be enough due to the hike in tuition fee prices. Receiving the acceptance email felt like a big sigh as now I am less pressured about funding my studies. As a MSc student, this award means that I will spend less time working to meet extra costs, and more time focusing on the harsh demands of my course. I will ensure that I do my absolute best studying my subject, and play my part in the field of cancer research. Thank you Black Heart Foundation for believing in my goals. I am forever grateful.”
Marketing and Business | Oxford Brookes
“I will be forever thankful to the Black Heart Foundation for their generosity in supporting me with the pursuit of a Postgraduate degree. From a young age I had recognised the importance of education as a vehicle to success. Currently, the financial burden of postgraduate study in the UK has made further education unobtainable for students from a working-class background. I had always felt that despite my hopes, a Master’s degree would be a step too far for me. Therefore, I am incredibly humbled by the Black Heart Foundation in awarding me a scholarship to pursue this. The investment in me has given me such confidence and restored my drive to succeed. I am proud of my working-class identity, and the values of hard-work and determination that have been passed on to me and I will continue to live to those values. In this way, I hope that following my postgraduate degree and while building a career, I will be able to offer the same support to the future students who will be facing a similar situation.”
Human Rights and Politics | London School of Ecomonics
“It is difficult to convey how grateful I am to the Black Heart Foundation for honouring me with this scholarship. With their support, I am able to prolong my education by studying an MSc in Human Rights and Politics at the London School of Economics and Political Science. This degree will equip me with the necessary knowledge and experience to pursue a career in humanitarianism; an area that I am incredibly passionate about. I was elated to have been offered a place; however, high tuition and maintenance costs possessed additional challenges, which potentially jeopardised my ability to take the place. With the support of the BHF, I am now able to prioritise my studies and truly make the most out of this experience. I am forever thankful to Ric Lewis, Rhondi Brown and the other trustees who have supported me and my journey. I am beyond excited to begin this next chapter!”
Environmental Engineering | Cranfield University
“I would like to thank Black Heart for granting me this scholarship to fund my master’s in Environmental Management for Business at Cranfield University. I aim to use this degree to work to implement real change, and with this scholarship Black Heart has gifted me the support to do so. I have been working multiple jobs at a time since the age of 16 so being granted the freedom to just focus all of my energy on my studies and not carry the stress that money issues can bring is invaluable. Now I can actually carry out relevant work experience or an internship instead, which again will help make me that much stronger a candidate for future jobs. The work Black Heart does is truly amazing. It gives people like me from disadvantaged backgrounds hope and reminds us that the things that we may have once considered not to be for us can be for us. I hope to influence the younger generation from a similar background to mine to join the climate fight and take action in the causes they believe in.”
Enviromental Biomedical Science | University of Warwick
“The Black Heart Foundation has really changed my life with this scholarship. As a hard of hearing student in the midst of a pandemic, finding an environment that was facilitative for either work or study was a nightmare, and thus I wasn’t able to save all the money I needed to study a dream course in environmentalism and sustainability. But now, with the support of The Black Heart Foundation, I can now say that I will be able to afford this opportunity of a lifetime. Now I will be able to focus on my studies without the stress of where the next rent payment may come from or wondering if I’ll have to take on a job during what will undoubtedly be the busiest year of my life, and this is an amazing feeling which can’t be accurately described. I’m so excited to help build disabled representation within the STEM community and be able to propel myself to a role in which I can really help begin to change the world. It is wonderful to be able to say that everything I have worked and struggled for has been worth it. I will forever be thankful to The Black Heart Foundation and the work that they’ve done to not only help me but to help hundreds of students overcome the barriers to higher education and fulfil their destiny.”
Cardiovascular Research | The Glasgow Caledonian University
“Having completed my Msc at the birthing of the pandemic I was delighted to attain a place on a PhD programme at the Glasgow Caledonian University, a feet I would not have imagined for myself. Upon attaining the position, it was made evident that the post was self-funded, and it would require the student to take full responsibility of the tuition fees and self-maintenance costs for the duration of the programme. Knowing that I did not have the means to support myself nor meet fee demands, I groped for solutions which is how I came across The Black Heart Foundation. It was a reassurance to read the testimonials of every life that had been impacted by this foundation and the dire scenarios they were delivered from; I applied in faith and they did not disappoint. I thank Christ for having been favoured to receive this award and truly treasure the financial backing provided by it’s trustees as I would have not been able to progress with research. In my life, this foundation has opened a door that will lead to many opportunities that I could not attain by my own means. The work done by this foundation surpasses merit as it helps people change their own lives and impact those around them. Truly, The Black Heart Foundation is a blessing to which I show the most gratitude. Thank you, very much.”
Psychology and Clinicial Psychology | Goldsmith University
“I cannot describe this opportunity as anything other than a sheer miracle, I am so humbled and grateful for this scholarship, especially because it came at such an important and defining time in my academic career. Rather than viewing me as a victim of my economic situation, the Black Heart Foundation had seen me as an individual with potential, and have provided me with a privilege that I have never encountered before. They have dissipated my financial struggle and catalyse my journey to pursuing medicine. I can proudly say that with the support of the Black Heart Foundation, I will be able to pay for the tuition fees of the third and final year of my degree. I will carry forward this hope and investment in me by progressing into psychiatry, where I aim to establish a system to actively aid mental health in children and adolescents from low socio-economic backgrounds, like myself, and organise prevention and support workshops for schools through techniques established in talking therapies. I ultimately aim to give back to the community that has supported me – and so by providing me with the educational access, and by improving my emotional well-being, words can do no justice in conveying how grateful I am, and the unmitigated joy I feel, to receive such an opportunity from the Foundation.”
Reproductive and Perinatal Epidemiology | Temple University
“My name is Luther-King, and most people simply call me ‘Luther.’ My father named me after the late American civil rights leader, Rev. (Dr) Martin Luther King, Jr. I was born and raised in Nigeria, where I trained to be a medical doctor at the University of Lagos. Having worked in Africa and Europe for some time, I joined the PhD program in Epidemiology at Temple University in Philadelphia, United States in August, 2019. My field of interest has been global health, especially reproductive health and infectious diseases. I have always been passionate about health systems that support women through a healthy pregnancy, and to see these women have healthy babies that are well nurtured to adulthood. Therefore, my current studies at Temple University entail reproductive epidemiology, including preeclampsia and sexually transmissible infections, such as HIV. Unfortunately, as I was wrapping up the 2nd Year of my PhD program, my supervising professor decided to take her career to another university, and with her went her research dollars (which funds my PhD tuition). By securing a Black Heart Foundation (BHF) Scholarship, I was able to cover the balance of my tuition fees, and I am so grateful to BHF for their generosity. This Scholarship award will help me progress into the final phases of my PhD education, till completion. It also allows me to advance my career, as I grow into one of the most influential global health experts in reproductive health.”
Forensic Psychology | University of Nottingham
“It is difficult to express how grateful I am to have received a scholarship from the Black Heart Foundation, and I was overwhelmed with relief and happiness when I received the news. Currently there is no funding for the doctorate in Forensic Psychology that I am undertaking, and the time on placement/course demands do not allow for part time work, making the career path inaccessible for those from lower income backgrounds. The lack of funding does not reflect the need for this specialism to support, arguably, some of the most vulnerable people in society. The scholarship has alleviated so much worry and anxiety about how to secure funding to finish the doctorate and has allowed me to continue to follow my ambitions of becoming a Forensic Psychologist, which I am now in the final stages of achieving! I am eternally grateful for the support of the Black Heart Foundation, and I want to thank the foundation for believing and investing in me. I hope I can pay this forward in the future.”
Pg Dip (Masters) Global Mental Health | Queen Mary University of London
“The black heart foundation has provided me with the exciting opportunity to further my studies by sponsoring a PGDip. in ‘Cultural and Global Perspectives in Mental Health Care’. Being a recipient of such a scholarship has relieved me of financial burdens that would have otherwise hindered my studies. In the absence of such funding, I would have had to work full time to support myself which would have negatively impacted my academic ability. This opportunity has greatly aided my journey in pursuing a career in clinical psychology. Through this profession, I aspire to transform how mental health conditions are viewed and catered for, both socially and clinically, especially amongst vulnerable groups e.g. refugees, care leavers and people of ethnic minorities. Working with these groups has been the forefront of many volunteer projects I have participated in both in the UK and abroad, all seeking to improve the mental wellbeing of these individuals. Aside from my practical experience, I am now looking forward to gaining a greater theoretical understanding of how mental health issues manifest in these groups, and it is thanks to this foundation that I am able to gain such. I am truly humbled and appreciative to be recognised by such an organisation.”
Politics and Economics | University of Birmingham
“I have always been a student determined to defy the odds stacked against me and wanting to succeed in life. I have strived to find opportunities to help change the trajectory of my life, but I faced limitation due to lack of social and economic capital that I didn’t have. I am so grateful to the BHF that they have awarded me this scholarship as it will help ease the financial burden.
This award will not only enable me to pursue my dream of becoming an investment banker but provide the incentive to keep striving and defying the odds. I want to thank the BHF for investing in me and choosing to support my dream. I can’t wait to give back to this foundation in the future and help people like myself!”
Human, Social and Political Sciences | University of Cambridge
“I am very proud and thankful to The Black Heart foundation for selecting me as a recipient of this award. The scholarship will lessen the stress associated with the financial burden of university. Not only will this allow me to immerse myself in societies, extra curriculars and other commitments, but will help ease the weight of student debt I face post university allowing me to start my working life free of extra stress. Overall, the removal of a cloud of financial troubles will give me peace of mind and help me to prosper at university and beyond. I hope to serve as an example of how finances should not be a limitation to an individuals education.”
Economics | University College London
“I would like to thank The Black Heart Foundation for this opportunity. This scholarship has relived me of the stress of finances of a student in London. This scholarship is so beneficial for people coming from low-income households that face financial barriers of going to university and achieving their dreams. I was ecstatic to find out I was achieved an unconditional offer to study Economics at UCL. However, the financial burden of living in London was going to impact my university experience and future aspirations. Now with the help of the Black Heart Foundation, I hope to achieve future experience in the banking world and become a role model within my sphere of influence, community and the world at large as a trader, paving the way for future city traders from the same background and struggles as myself. Thank you again to the Black Heart Foundation for believing in me.”
Forensics | University of Kent
“I will never be able to thank the Black Heart Foundation enough for this scholarship. When I first came across the Foundation I was unsure as to whether I should apply, but after lots of deliberation I decided to go for it, and it’s forever going to be one of the best decisions I will ever make. I have always enjoyed school, and university was the next step in my education, but unfortunately, it’s a very expensive step. I always knew I wanted a job where I could make a difference, and I found the perfect field for me, combining my love of science with my desire to help people. The job market for my degree is extremely competitive, and to stand a chance of working in this field I need the best grades that I can get. Thanks to the Foundation’s generous investment into my future, I am now able to focus entirely on my studies meaning I don’t have to compromise the quality of my university assignments by taking on extra paid work. This will allow me to achieve the best grades I possibly can, allowing me the best chance at securing a job after. Therefore, I will forever owe the Foundation everything, because of the amazing help they have provided me, I stand a chance at being one of the best, giving me a great chance at a career, something I wouldn’t have had otherwise. Thank you so much to The Black Heart Foundation, for everything.”
“Words will not be able to accurately demonstrate the life-changing effects of being a recipient of the Black Heart Foundation scholarship. Nor will it ever be able to truly express the extent of my gratitude for the amazing opportunity that it presents. After having to interrupt my studies for two years due to serious financial difficulties, this scholarship came nothing short of a miraculous gift. One that will not only enable me to complete the last year of my degree and finally graduate, but to do so without any financial burdens or additional stress hanging over me. I will also be forever grateful for the endless opportunities that are now comfortably within my grasp, and I am beyond excited to explore all the possibilities open to me after university without fear of financial barriers getting in the way. I will always deeply appreciate and admire the foundation for not allowing the harsh realities of mine and many other’s socioeconomic and social class status impede career prospects and life ambitions. As Benjamin Franklin said, “an investment in knowledge pays the best interest” and I am eternally grateful to the Black Heart Foundation for investing in me and my education; I hope one day I will be able to pay it forward and help support the inspirational aims of the Black Heart Foundation in every way I can.”
Masters Product Design | Royal College of Art
“It’s hard to show enough appreciation for the opportunity that the Black Heart Foundation has afforded me. Put simply, had I not been awarded this scholarship, I would not have been able to return to study for the final year of my Masters at the Royal College of Art and continue to progress towards my goal of becoming a product designer in my own right. To be awarded a scholarship by such an incredible organization that works solely to help individuals in need, in the pursuit of their goals is humbling. This award has allowed me the possibility to drastically change my prospects in life and I hope one day I have the chance to pay this generosity forward.”

MBBS (Undergraduate) Medicine | Brighton and Sussex Medical School
“I don’t think I can adequately express my immense gratitude for the Black Heart Foundation scholarship being granted to me! I count it a privilege to be a Black Heart Foundation Scholar. I am committed to emulate the BHF’s core values and to selflessly support underrepresented students, and to prove with confidence, the success that this scholarship will fulfil.
Gaining this scholarship has lifted the financial and emotional constraints which has been my previous experience. This scholarship empowers me to achieve what I know I am capable of, and to re-invest this into the students like myself from disadvantaged backgrounds. A passion of mine is to push myself to achieve academic excellence and to inspire and teach others how to achieve the same with practical examples and guidance. It’s infrequent for students that came from a state school background to reach postgraduate education, as the tuition fees are a significant barrier that directly opposes our socioeconomic background. However, the significant financial support of the Black Heart Foundation scholarship has allowed me to conquer this barrier. This scholarship brings more financial flexibility, and enables me to commit more of my time to my medical studies and volunteering in diverse healthcare settings- driving me closer to contributing back to those with ill health, disabled, and disadvantaged. I strongly believe that this life-impacting scholarship would enable me to be the best medical doctor I can be to the lives of my patients.”

“I am truly grateful to the Black Heart Foundation for allowing me to further my studies where I may not have had the opportunity to do so otherwise. I feel motivated to work even harder to achieve my goals. I am proud to be a Black Heart Scholar and represent an organisation which supports individuals like myself to follow and keep hold onto their goals and aspirations, no matter how ambitious. Upon completion, I will be the holder of an IOP-accredited integrated master’s degree, following which I aim to combine my passion for science and the desire to benefit others to pursue a career in which I can have the most impact. Within Physics, there is an apparent lack of Muslim, BAME, and female representation. I hope to serve as a role model for aspiring youth raising aspiration and standard within the British Muslim community. I aim to increase awareness of surrounding issues and limited opportunities in this field for people of BAME backgrounds and Muslim women. The scholarship has aided me greatly in reducing the financial stress and worry which would be experienced otherwise. The scholarship will allow me to pursue my studies confidently, leaving time to focus on my studies, engage in extracurriculars and maintaining a healthy mind and body.”

“I had so much anxiety before embarking onto my final year of medicine at the university of Bristol. After 6 years of being on this course I have managed to achieve so much but it has come at a price. With the final hurdle approaching I was anxious about how I would be able to fully focus on passing the most important exams I am yet to ever do whilst also juggling a part time job and ensuring I was completing all the other components necessary to pass my clinical placements. I’ve always known the financial burden of taking on such a long degree without the adequate support available. Applying to the scholarship programme was me exercising my last bit of hope in gaining some form of support to alleviate the added stresses of completing this degree during a global pandemic. I found out my application had been successful during a night shift and I remember feeling a huge wave of relief and excitement so much that I didn’t struggle to stay awake that night. I cannot put into adequate words how much it means to receive this level of support. Being awarded the ability to continue studying without financial pressures is one of the highlights of my university experience so far. I am very grateful for what this will enable me to achieve and even more so that it pushes me closer to being in a position to one day do the same for others.”

“I would like to express my genuine gratitude to all The Black Heart Foundation team that has granted me this award. I would like to show that having a great aspiration for something extraordinarily fresh and vital in your life can bring a high level of enthusiasm and emphasis to accomplish an individual’s goals mutually in personal life and career. Being able to study for a master’s degree course at a research-intensive Russel group university gives me the opportunity to acquire a qualification that can be used to indicate my suitability for a life progression in engineering and management. This earned opportunity to study at King’s College London allows me to come closer to my dream of becoming a chartered engineer recognised by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. I am thrilled to have been awarded The Black Heart Foundation Scholarship as I will embody an inspiring ideal to encourage others with assurance and direction into believing into themselves and grow self-confidence as a criterion for taking substantial action for the good of this world. As a Black Heart Foundation Scholar, I will expose myself as a student and mentor to lead more young pupils into STEM which can present them with a prospect to embark on an journey into this excellent and gratifying field, progress a passion for it and optimistically trail a job in a STEM area for those interested. I would like to direct all people for dreaming big and enhance the quality of their lives.”
